A Novel Finding: The Effect of Nurse Practitioners on the Relation to Quality of Life, Anxiety, and Depressive Symptoms in Vascular Surgery
Conclusions: The same improvements were found for QoL and anxiety scores in both groups. Vascular NPs are therefore competent to explain procedures and guide patients through vascular interventions.

Percutaneous access for endovascular aortic aneurysm repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Percutaneous access demonstrates advantages over conventional surgical exposure for endovascular aneurysm repair, as indicated by access-related complications and hospital length of stay. Further research is required to define its impact on resource utilization, cost-effectiveness and quality of life. PMID: 27000385 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Primary pulmonary arterial hypertension with preserved right ventricular function leads to lower extremity venous insufficiency.
Conclusions The degree of venous insufficiency increase in accordance with the mean pulmonary arterial pressure even in patients with preserved right ventricular function. PMID: 28835185 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is there an impact of COVID-19 in Vascular Surgery patient ’s admission to the Emergency department?
On March 2020, World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak a pandemic. During this period, surgical activity and admission to the Emergency Department (ED) globally decreased. The aim of this paper is to understand how Vascular Surgery patient ’s admission to the ED changed in our center in Portugal and if this situation prevented urgent surgical procedures.

Through-knee versus above-knee amputation for vascular and non-vascular major lower limb amputations
CONCLUSIONS: No RCTs have been conducted to determine comparative clinical or rehabilitation outcomes of through-knee amputation and above-knee amputation, or complication rates. It is unknown whether either of these approaches offers improved outcomes for patients. RCTs are needed to guide practice and to ensure the best outcomes for this patient group.PMID:34904714 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013839.pub2

Antipsychotics for agitation and psychosis in people with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia
CONCLUSIONS: There is some evidence that typical antipsychotics might decrease agitation and psychosis slightly in patients with dementia. Atypical antipsychotics reduce agitation in dementia slightly, but their effect on psychosis in dementia is negligible. The apparent effectiveness of the drugs seen in daily practice may be explained by a favourable natural course of the symptoms, as observed in the placebo groups. Both drug classes increase the risk of somnolence and other adverse events. If antipsychotics are considered for sedation in patients with severe and dangerous symptoms, this should be discussed openly with t...

Remote ischaemic preconditioning versus no remote ischaemic preconditioning for vascular and endovascular surgical procedures
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, compared with no RIPC, RIPC probably leads to little or no difference in perioperative mortality, myocardial infarction, renal impairment, stroke, hospital stay, and operating time, and may lead to little or no difference in limb loss in people undergoing elective major vascular and endovascular surgery. Adequately powered and designed randomised studies are needed, focusing in particular on the clinical endpoints and patient-centred outcomes.PMID:36645250 | PMC:PMC9841888 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD008472.pub3

Cholinesterase inhibitors for vascular dementia and other vascular cognitive impairments: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We found moderate- to high-certainty evidence that donepezil 5 mg, donepezil 10 mg, and galantamine have a slight beneficial effect on cognition in people with VCI, although the size of the change is unlikely to be clinically important. Donepezil 10 mg and galantamine 16 to 24 mg are probably associated with more adverse events than placebo. The evidence for rivastigmine was less certain. The data suggest that donepezil 10 mg has the greatest effect on cognition, but at the cost of adverse effects. The effect is modest, but in the absence of any other treatments, people living with VCI may still wish to consid...

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: There was very low or low quality evidence from RCTs for the efficacy and safety of anti-VEGF agents when used to treat PDR over and above current standard treatments. However, the results suggest that anti-VEGFs can reduce the risk of intraocular bleeding in people with PDR. Further carefully designed clinical trials should be able to improve this evidence. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for prevention of postoperative vitreous cavity haemorrhage after vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of pre- or intraoperative bevacizumab lowers the incidence of early POVCH. The reported complications from its use appear to be low. Futher randomised studies that look at other anti-VEGF medications are ongoing and will strengthen the current review findings, giving both surgeons and patients evidence to guide treatment choices in the management of proliferative retinopathy.
